Where is the best place to hang smoke detectors?

Our house only has one smoke detector and I would like to add more. We have split bedrooms and the one existing smoke detector is in the hallway nearest the kitchen, laundry room, and spare bedrooms/office. This is the opposite end of the house from the master bedroom and a good distance from the living area. I would like to put up at least two more, but I’m not sure if I should put one inside the master bedroom, above the door, or outside the bedroom, above the door. Which would be the best place, most likely to detect smoke AND wake us before it’s too late? Does it really make a difference which side of the door it’s on? We sleep with the door open.

New code requires a smoke detector in each bedroom within 3 feet of the door, as well as one on each level in a public area. It also requires them to be hardwired with battery backup, and interconnected. I realize that this is not feasible in your situation, but I would make sure to have one in each bedroom and one in the main area. It’s pretty cheap life insurance. Hope this helps.

The best place is the highest place. If a fire starts, smoke will hit the roof and spread along it. It will have no trouble spreading past doorways (unless the door is closed) even if the top of the door is lower than the ceiling.

Obvious places to put them are near the kitchen and if your house has two floors, immediately at the top of the stairs (so smoke from below will hit it if it goes up the stairs).

Smoke alarms are very cheap so it’s sensible to buy two or three.

If you put one IN the kitchen it will go off when you’re cooking, but if you put one in the hall outside it or away from the oven/hob then you might be alright, otherwise buy a heat detecting one rather than a smoke detecting one.

If you have children it’s a good idea to make sure they know what to do if they wake up with a room full of smoke, and also if they don’t but hear the fire alarm going off.

Remember to check the doorhandles before you walk into a room if the smoke alarm is going off by lightly touching it with the back of your hand. If it’s hot to the touch, do not open the door.

Stay low, and plan how to get out of your house. If you are trapped, keep the door closed and put a blanket at the bottom of the door. Call the emergency services and lie low on the floor.

Plan the best ways out of your house and place your smoke alarms accordingly.

you should have a smoke detector in every room in your home.in the rooms not outside the doors if you are going to put them up on theoutside of the doors make sure they are on the outside just before you enter the rooms.

bedrooms, kitchen, basement, garage, nearly everywhere especially where people may sleep, near appliances and furnaces, or placed where people may not be able to see the fire such as in the garage or basement…bedrooms are a must though, also make sure you have a meeting spot outside of your house. Also make sure the detectors are on the inside if smoke is detected on the outside you may not be able to hear the alarm going off; however you can test it and if you can hear it clearly then put it on the outside to detect the smoke before its too late.
