Carbon monoxide molecules bind irresversibly to the haemoglobin in red blood cells so once it attaches to the red blood cells it will not be released therefore the affected red blood cells are useless. Whereas carbon dioxide binds reversibly allowing the CO2 to leave via the lungs.
